Before you decide to hire anyone to do your home repairs or modifications, make sure you check their qualifications. Without verifying, you could be left with the bill and substandard work.
Make sure they can meet the following criteria:
- Can they change your walls to a perfect "smooth wall" (perfectly flat, smooth finish, no texture) or are their tape seams only workable with heavy texture finishes? Smooth wall is fast becoming a favorite high-end style again, and my favorite application of it is for large projector "screen walls". But for this to work, the quality of the drywall job has to be excellent.
- Can they patch damaged areas so that they blend in perfectly?
|
- Can they remove acoustic ("popcorn ceilings") without creating a lot of new dents and cuts that will need a lot of extra hours smoothing them out later?
- Are they doing the work they are billing you for themselves, or are you paying them contractor markups (often up to 100%) for work done by other, often less qualified hands?
